Two years ago, Gareth walked into SOS Personal Training feeling broken—both physically and mentally.
After struggling with his weight for most of his life and facing some incredibly difficult personal challenges, he knew something had to change. What he didn't expect was that his own transformation would eventually lead him to become a coach, helping others change their lives too.
The Challenge
Before joining SOS, Gareth had spent years trying to lose weight without success.
He'd tried running, different approaches and doing it alone, but nothing ever seemed to stick. Alongside his physical health, his mental wellbeing had reached its lowest point.
Life had thrown plenty of challenges his way, including losing his father, going through a divorce and raising his child as a single parent for 15 years.
When he first saw an SOS advert while watching his son play football, he decided he had nothing left to lose.
Why He Nearly Didn't Start
Even after booking his first session, Gareth almost didn't come in.
He parked in the car park, became overwhelmed with nerves and drove home without ever walking through the door.
Fortunately, Sam gave him a call and encouraged him to come back another day.
That second attempt changed everything.
The Turning Point
From the moment Gareth walked through the doors, he realised SOS wasn't like any other gym.
There were no egos. Just friendly faces, supportive coaches and members who genuinely wanted each other to succeed.
As his confidence grew, something unexpected happened.
Although he'd joined to improve his physical health, the biggest transformation happened in his mindset.
As Gareth explains:
"I came here to improve myself physically, but I found the mental health side had more of an impact. The physical side is just the icing on the cake."
The Results
Two years after joining, Gareth's life looks completely different.
He has:
Transformed both his physical and mental health.
Built confidence he never thought possible.
Found a positive, supportive community.
Gone from member to becoming an SOS coach.
Helped inspire and support new members starting their own journeys.
Looking back, he says:
"It's life-changing. They've turned me around so much that I'm now able to coach other people and inspire others who've gone through difficult times. I'm probably in the best place I've ever been in my life."
More Than a Gym
For Gareth, SOS became far more than somewhere to exercise.
It became a place where he rebuilt his confidence, improved his mental health and discovered a passion for helping others.
Today, he's the coach he once needed himself—proof that with the right support, incredible change is possible.
